At Golden Solar BIPV, we believe solar should be an integral part of the building, not an afterthought. That’s why we have made it our mission to bring Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) to the forefront of New Zealand's construction and energy sectors. Shawn, the director and founder of Golden Solar BIPV, was recently privileged to be interviewed by Kristy, the director of My Solar Quotes, the well-known New Zealand solar power quote service provider, to discuss the future of solar solutions for Aotearoa.
The idea for Golden Solar BIPV was sparked nearly a decade ago when Shawn first encountered Tesla’s solar roof tiles. That inspiration turned into a passion for BIPV and the drive to build a business that could make it a reality in Aotearoa.
After COVID-19, Shawn saw a tipping point: construction was seeking ways to decarbonise, and solar tech had matured. Golden Solar BIPV launched in early 2023 to meet this moment, bringing together functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics under one roof (literally).
BIPV doesn’t just add solar to a building, it transforms how buildings are conceived. As a dual-purpose solution, BIPV materials can replace traditional roofing or cladding while also generating clean power.

“It’s not just about adding solar, it’s about redefining the building envelope,” explains Shawn. “BIPV provides fire resistance, waterproofing, insulation, and energy generation, all in one product.”
Because BIPV is considered part of the architecture, it also addresses practical concerns like wind loading, visual harmony, and space utilisation, especially important in urban areas.
Aesthetics have always been a major barrier to solar adoption. Many homeowners and architects have shied away from conventional solar due to its bulky appearance.
“That’s where BIPV shines,” Shawn notes. “Because it’s integrated from the start, it becomes part of the design, sleek, modern, and architectural.”
Whether it’s black-on-black solar tiles, frameless glass panels, or seamless solar facades, Golden Solar BIPV offer solutions that elevate rather than compromise the look of a home or commercial building.
Not at all. While new builds offer the best opportunity for BIPV, replacing conventional materials like roofing or cladding, retrofits are increasingly viable too, especially when part of larger renovations or roof replacements.
“It just requires good planning and alignment with structural and council considerations,” says Shawn.
Solar Tiles & Local Certification
Yes, Golden Solar do offer solar roof tiles, an innovation that’s been long-anticipated in the New Zealand market. But because they’re classified as building materials, full BRANZ certification is required.

“We’re actively working with the University of Canterbury and other partners to develop a solar roofing product designed for New Zealand conditions, using local IP and testing standards.”
The Rise of the Solar Carport
Solar carports are gaining popularity, especially among commercial clients, councils, and logistics operators.
“They’re practical and visually striking,” explains Shawn. “You get weather protection, energy production, and EV charging potential—all in one.”
For residential customers, carports provide a great alternative when rooftop solar isn’t feasible. They’re also relatively straightforward to consent, depending on the region.

The Solar Sunflower Arrives in New Zealand
Golden Solar proudly introduced New Zealand’s first Solar Sunflower to the University of Canterbury’s Ilam campus in 2024. This sculptural, sun-tracking system serves both as a renewable energy source and as a visual statement.

“It’s best suited for public or commercial spaces,” says Shawn. “But we’re open to working with homeowners who have the space and want something truly iconic.”
What Comes Next? Toward Fifth-Generation Buildings
At Golden Solar, we believe BIPV is a key pillar of what we call fifth-generation buildings, structures that generate, manage, and optimise their own energy through smart technologies.
“BIPV is no longer optional. It’s an essential component of self-sustaining, intelligent environments that are better for the planet and for people.”
Golden Solar is also developing new technologies, including solar facades and paving tiles, to further expand the role of solar in the built environment.
A Collaborative Path Forward
Scaling BIPV across New Zealand requires collaboration. We work closely with architects, builders, engineers, and local councils to ensure each project meets both performance and design goals.
“This isn’t a one-company journey,” says Shawn. “It’s a collective effort to reshape how we build, and how we power — our future.”
