# Two Solar Canopies, One Smarter Home
**West Melton, Christchurch | 12.8kW BIPV Solar Canopies & Sigenergy Battery Storage**
### A Beautiful Outdoor Space with a Smarter Purpose
For this family in West Melton, the original plan was simple: create two practical outdoor covered spaces — one beside the swimming pool and another in the courtyard.
They wanted comfortable, sheltered areas where the family could relax, entertain guests and enjoy outdoor living throughout the year.
But there was another important consideration.
Like many properties in the area, the home occasionally experiences power outages. The homeowners were also interested in solar energy and battery storage to reduce their reliance on the electricity grid.
**Why build ordinary canopies when those same structures could also generate electricity for the home?**
### Two Canopies, One Integrated Solar Solution
Golden Solar designed and installed two customised BIPV solar canopies — one larger and one smaller — positioned to suit the property's outdoor spaces.
Instead of adding conventional solar panels to separate structures, the solar modules form part of the canopy roofing itself.
The result is a clean, modern design that combines everyday shelter with renewable energy generation.
Together, the two canopies deliver **12.8kW of solar capacity**, integrated with a Sigenergy battery storage system.
### Solar Power That Works Beyond Daylight Hours
During the day, the canopies generate electricity to help power the household, while surplus energy can be stored in the battery for use later.
Golden Solar also incorporated a **backup power solution**, giving the family an additional layer of protection during unexpected grid outages.
That means the system is designed not only to help reduce electricity costs, but also to keep selected essential household circuits running when grid power is unavailable, subject to battery charge and available solar generation.
For the homeowners, it's about more than saving money — it's the reassurance of having their own energy source when they need it.
### Real Energy, Everyday Benefits
The completed system has demonstrated strong solar generation, typically producing around **50–60kWh on productive days**, with peak daily generation reaching approximately **90kWh** under favourable conditions.
Actual output naturally varies with sunshine, weather and season.
Beyond the numbers, the family now enjoys two attractive outdoor canopies that also contribute to powering their home.
